Happy New Year Fellow Citizen,

Peter and I spent our meeting today talking, not arguing (okay, maybe a little), but really talking — about the word “woke.” How it’s been stretched, twisted, mocked, weaponized… and somehow still matters.

At our meeting, we kicked ideas around, questioned and asked a simple question:
What does “woke” actually mean to us? And if it means something to us, which it does, how do we spread the idea and values that we believe it embodies?

After a lot of coffee (tea for Jon, who although a native Seattleite has never liked coffee) and a surprising amount of grammar discussion, two ideas kept rising to the top:
  • Woke is Empathy
  • Woke is Compassion.
WOKE IS NOT
  • A checklist
  • A label
  • A purity test.
An image of...

Just the radical act of caring about people who aren’t exactly like you.
And yes — before you email us — we know it’s not grammatically perfect (especially Jon's wife, the excellent grammarian). That part is intentional.

Sometimes breaking the rules makes you stop and think!
Sometimes a phrase that feels “off” sticks in your head a little longer!
Sometimes being ungrammatical is the whole point!

Because empathy doesn’t always fit neatly into a sentence. And compassion doesn’t come with perfect punctuation.

At MerchMuse, we don’t believe “woke” is something to fear. We think it’s something to practice and embrace. If a shirt sparks a conversation — or even an argument that leads to reflection — we’ve done our job. Take a look at our newest designs inspired by this idea, and tell us what you think “woke” means in today’s world.

Until next time,
Stay curious. Stay kind. Stay a little ungrammatical. 😉
— Jon & Peter

PS In today's meeting, we started to talk about American imperialism, but decided to focus on the positive. We'll save that for next week, in the meantime stay woke and spread the message!
